Is Vedic Indian astrology scientific?

Before going deep into the course I will discuss a few things about Indian astrology. There had been a lot of debate about predicting the future using planets those are far away from this earth. Even though astronomy is considered a science astrology has been named as pseudo-science. So what is the wrong about predicting the future?
In short I will point to a few things.

Take The Bible. In the Bible you will find detailed and accurate predictions about humanity thousands of years back. Like from the very first chapter of Genesis to the end of Revelation there have been predictions about the sufferings of the Jews hundreds may be thousands years before they were born.
In the Holy Writ there had been an accurate prediction about the birth and activities of JESUS CHRIST hundreds of years before HE was born.

To the ancient Indian sages astronomy and astrology was no different. In fact astronomy was a small part of the ancient Indian astrology. They discovered the science of astrology where the influence of stars and planets in the life on earth can be analyzed.
The ancient Indian sages have divided the astroscience into 2 parts.
Part 1 – Astronomy, where only the movement and position of planets were conceptualized.
Part 2 – Astrology, where the influence of planets and stars on nature, wildlife and human beings were noted down. Take for example natural changes like earthquake, storm, tides and monsoon were a part of astrology. Again, changes in human life like birth, death, love, hate, disease, passion, sorrow etc were also a part of astrology.
Take for example, the tides in the rivers and oceans are influenced by the new moon and full moon. Again the strength and weakness of the moon have an influence on the arthritic pain in the joints of older people, asthmatic patients suffer more during the days of new moon or full moon, and even periods of women are influenced by these cycles of moon.

Human being has been in search of knowledge from time immemorial. So if astronomy is used to predict storms, rain, eclipse, tsunamis in nature what is the wrong in using astrology in predicting storms, rain, eclipse and tsunamis in your day to day life??

In the next post I will discuss about the planets and stars used in Indian Astrology.
Stay tuned.

In this blog I will guide you through an easy way to learn ancient Indian Astrology.
Thousands of websites are available on the net about Indian astrology. I will not bore you with all the well known theories. Instead in the introduction I will delve into some lesser known things about Indian astrology.

Indian astrology is thousands of years old like the Indian epic Mahabharata.

Mahabharata was created in a unique situation. Ancient Indian sage Vedvyas, the creator of Mahabharata, was in need of a scriptwriter for the epic, I am not sure if in his time he put the ad in some job board, or to some placement agency, but anyway after much walk in interviews, he was satisfied with candidate Ganesha. Ganesha, is known in the Hindu heaven as the God of wealth and fortune.
I purposely said Hindu heaven because I had never been to heaven, and I am not sure if there is a separate heaven for Hindus, Christians, Jews, Muslims and all the great religions.
Anyway, Ganesha agreed to be the scriptwriter for Mahabharata, but he had one condition, a very unique condition, that he would not stop his pen under any circumstance. That means the sage must be ready with the following verses before Ganesha finishes his writing the previous one. As such the epic Mahabharata was created.
Legend says Bidura the royal advisor to the blind king Dhritarastra in the epic Mahabharata had much faith in Indian astrology and he knew beforehand that the great war of Kurukshetra would be the demise of Kauravas. Only the boneheaded prince Duryodhana wouldn’t believe him.

Now I am not here to narrate the great epic. According to legends,Ganesha, the Hindu God, the scriptwriter of Mahabharata was the founder of Indian astrology.

I would like to mention another myth about Indian astrology. When Shiva, another Hindu God, father of Ganesha in the Hindu heaven heard about Ganesha’s popularity about predicting the future with this new subject astrology, he decided to put his son to some test. One day he called up Ganesha and told him to use astrology to locate where his mother would be about a hundred years from that date, at a particular time. Ganesha’s mother, known in the Hindu heaven as Goddess Durga. Ganesha used all his complicated calculations of astrology and said his mother would be in Mansarawar lake, enjoying a bath with all other goddesses at that particular time. Mansarawar lake is a very sacred lake to all Hindus, now located in Chinese occupied Tibet. Shiva used his divine powers and saw Ganesha was absolutely correct. What Shiva found disturbing was that Goddess Durga was indeed bathing in that lake with other goddesses, but as happens while enjoying a bath in a lake; none of the Goddesses were wearing anything.
Ganesha had his eyes fixed to the ground, quite ashamed of himself. Shiva said, “Hm, Well son, you have indeed discovered a unique subject, but if this subject falls into the hands of men, situation will be quite threatening. As you are determined to teach human beings this subject, I will restrict your and the predictive power of astrology to 70 per cent. The rest 30 per cent predictive power will stay with me forever.”

As such any excellent Indian astrologer can only predict the future up to 70 per cent. The rest, including numerous things like birth, death, marriage is beyond the scope of Indian astrology. That will stay with Lord Shiva for time immemorial.

In this blog, I will guide you through the path of learning Indian astrology in the easiest possible way. Stay tuned.
